TYL Physical Education – Family FAQ
At TYL Middle School, our Physical Education program focuses on helping students build healthy habits, stay active, and develop confidence through movement and teamwork. Below are some common questions from families:
What should my child wear to PE class?
Students should come prepared in comfortable clothing and sneakers so they can safely participate in all activities.
What if my child isn’t feeling well but still attends school?
We understand that students may not always feel their best. A parent/guardian note will be accepted for one day. If your child needs to sit out for more than one day, a doctor’s note is required.
How are students graded in PE?
Grades are based on effort, participation, and personal improvement—not just athletic ability. We encourage all students to try their best and stay engaged.
What is the Connecticut Physical Fitness Assessment (CPFA)?
This statewide assessment helps measure student fitness in key areas:
- Cardiovascular endurance (PACER Test)
- Flexibility (Sit and Reach)
- Muscular strength (Right Angle Push-Ups)
- Muscular endurance (Curl-Ups)
What does a typical PE class look like?
Classes begin with a warm-up, followed by structured activities and modified games designed to support all skill levels and keep students active and engaged.
What are the expectations for students?
We encourage all students to:
- Be Kind
- Play Fair
- Work Hard
- Be Safe
